The big western erg is a continent of dunes. In the margin of the big erg and down the arid cliffs, a stream of palm-groves forms a river of greenery. From this green torrent arises Timimoun, the most important oasis of Gourara. It is characterized by a Sudanese style architecture.
The dunes of the great western erg can reach a height of 120 m and culminate at 673 m. This one is delimited in the north by the Saharan Atlas, in the east by the M' Zab, in the south by Tadmait plateau and in the west by the oases of Touat and oued Saoura.
